This new wing was commissioned for service in January 2008, home to one of the country’s largest cancer centers, the St James’s Institute of Oncology and is set to become one of the largest specialist cancer treatment centers in Europe.
High-tech treatment equipment includes ten linear accelerators, four computerized tomography (CT) simulators, three CT scanners, two magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners and a nuclear medicine department equipped with five gamma cameras.

Ward 84 has now 30 dedicated beds for thoracic surgery patients with four high dependency beds and full access to intensive care beds. Operations are carried out every weekday and have a substantial turn over of patients. We receive patients from all over the region with serving population of over 3 million and anticipate the workload to increase substantially in the succeeding years. The estimated number of minor and major procedures per year will be more than 2000 including large proportion of complex thoracic and minimally invasive surgical procedures.
Cancer services here in Leeds by the department on thoracic surgery already have an excellent national and international reputation. By bringing services together in this magnificent new building we now have a highest standard of accommodation, medical technology and skill which matches the best available anywhere the world. |
